What impact will oil pump plunger wear have on the engine
Power output decreases
After the oil pump plunger is worn, the gap between it and the plunger sleeve increases, resulting in increased fuel leakage during the compression process. As a result, the amount of fuel that can be delivered to the injector each time the oil is compressed is reduced, resulting in insufficient fuel supply in each cylinder of the engine, insufficient formation of mixed gas, and reduced energy generated by combustion, which ultimately leads to a decrease in engine power output, manifested as symptoms such as weak acceleration and difficulty climbing.
Fuel economy deteriorates
Due to fuel leakage caused by wear of the oil pump plunger, in order to maintain the normal operation of the engine, the driver may unconsciously increase the throttle to allow more fuel to enter the engine. However, this extra fuel cannot be effectively converted into power, but is wasted, resulting in increased fuel consumption and worse fuel economy of the car, that is, the amount of fuel consumed by the vehicle for the same mileage increases.
Unstable engine operation
Wear of the oil pump plunger will affect the stability of the fuel supply, resulting in uneven fuel supply in each cylinder. Some cylinders have more fuel supply, while others have less fuel supply, which will cause inconsistent combustion conditions in each cylinder and unbalance the engine's working cycle, causing engine shaking and unstable operation. In severe cases, it may even cause the engine to stall.
Difficult to start
When the engine starts, sufficient fuel pressure is required for the injector to work properly and spray fuel into the cylinder to form a combustible mixture. After the oil pump plunger is worn, the fuel pressure builds slowly and it is difficult to reach the pressure value required for normal starting, which makes the injector's injection effect poor and the amount of fuel entering the cylinder insufficient, resulting in difficulty in starting the engine. It may take multiple starts to succeed, or even in some cases it cannot start at all.
Increased wear of other parts
Oil pump plunger wear leads to abnormal fuel supply, which will cause other parts inside the engine to bear additional pressure and wear. For example, due to insufficient or uneven fuel supply, the lubrication and cooling effects between the piston, piston ring and cylinder wall deteriorate, aggravating the wear of these parts; at the same time, the injector may also fail due to unstable fuel pressure, further affecting the normal operation of the engine. In the long run, it will shorten the overall service life of the engine and increase maintenance costs.
Excessive emissions
Due to uneven fuel supply and incomplete combustion, the exhaust gas discharged by the engine will contain more unburned fuel, carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons and other harmful substances, resulting in excessive exhaust emissions. This not only pollutes the environment, but may also cause the vehicle to fail environmental protection tests.
