    Diesel fuel injector key technology development

    Diesel engines are widely used in many fields such as transportation, agricultural machinery, power generation and so on with its good fuel economy, reliability and power. As the core component of the diesel fuel injection system, the performance of the injector directly affects the quality of diesel atomization, the degree of uniformity of oil and gas mixing, as well as the advantages and disadvantages of the combustion process, which in turn plays a decisive role in the engine's power output, fuel consumption, emission levels and other key performance indicators. With the global concern for the energy crisis and environmental pollution issues continue to increase, in-depth study of diesel fuel injector technology to achieve the optimization of its performance to promote the sustainable development of the diesel engine industry is of great practical significance.

    Working Principle of Diesel Fuel Injector
    The basic working principle of diesel fuel injector is to use high pressure to spray diesel fuel into the engine cylinder in the form of mist. When the engine control unit issued a fuel injection instruction, the injector electromagnetic coil is energized, generating electromagnetic force to overcome the spring force to make the needle valve open, high-pressure diesel fuel from the nozzle hole in the high-speed spray, the formation of fine oil mist particles, and the air is fully mixed with the combustion. In the injection process, injection pressure, injection duration, injection timing and other parameters of the precise control is critical, the change of these parameters will directly change the fuel injection characteristics and combustion effect.

    Diesel fuel injector key technology development
    (i) the enhancement of injection pressure
    Early diesel fuel injector injection pressure is relatively low, with the progress of technology, the emergence of high-pressure common rail system so that the injection pressure has been greatly improved. High-pressure common rail system can be independent of the engine speed and load for precise control of fuel pressure, the highest injection pressure can reach more than 2000bar. The high injection pressure helps the diesel fuel to atomize better and increases the contact area between the fuel and air, thus improving combustion efficiency and reducing particulate matter (PM) and hydrocarbon (HC) emissions. For example, with the use of UHP injectors on heavy-duty diesel engines, PM emissions can be reduced by about 30% and fuel economy is also improved.

    (ii) Precise control of injection timing
    Injection timing has a significant impact on the performance and emissions of diesel engines. Traditional mechanical injector injection timing is difficult to achieve flexible and precise adjustment, while modern electronic control injectors optimize injection timing in real time according to engine operating conditions (such as idling, acceleration, full load, etc.) through the engine electronic control unit (ECU). Advanced injection timing control strategy can make diesel fuel injected into the cylinder at the most appropriate moment, avoiding the rough combustion caused by too early injection and incomplete combustion caused by too late injection, effectively improving the engine's dynamics and thermal efficiency, while reducing nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions.

    (iii) Improvement of injection atomization quality
    In order to further improve the atomization effect of diesel fuel, the injector hole structure and injection method are continuously optimized. The use of multi-hole injector nozzle design, increase the number of spray holes and reduce the diameter of the spray holes, so that diesel fuel can be more evenly dispersed into small oil droplets to improve the quality of atomization. In addition, some new injectors also use multiple injection technology, such as pre-injection, main injection and post-injection. Pre-injection reduces combustion noise and NOx emissions, main injection provides the main power output, and post-injection helps promote the oxidation of incomplete combustion products, reducing HC and CO emissions while improving particulate emission characteristics.
