Introduction of cam disc
Function
In the fuel injection system: For diesel engines using VE distribution pumps and other types, the cam disc is a key component that drives the distribution pump plunger. When the cam disc rotates, its contour pushes the plunger in the distribution pump to reciprocate, realizes the fuel pressurization and distribution, and accurately delivers the fuel to the injectors of each cylinder according to the engine's working order and injection timing requirements.
In the valve train: Similar to gasoline engines, it controls the opening and closing timing of the valves to ensure that fresh air enters the cylinder at the appropriate time, and that the exhaust gas after combustion is discharged from the cylinder, ensuring the normal ventilation process of the engine, making the combustion more complete, and improving the engine's power output and fuel economy.
Working principle
Take the cam disc in the VE distribution pump as an example. The cam disc is installed on the drive shaft of the distribution pump and rotates with the shaft. The outer peripheral contour of the cam disc has a specific curve shape. When it rotates, its raised part will push the roller, plunger and other components in the distribution pump to move. Driven by the cam disc, the plunger reciprocates in the pump chamber. When the plunger moves downward, the volume of the pump chamber increases, generating suction, sucking the fuel from the fuel tank through the filter into the pump chamber; when the plunger moves upward, the volume of the pump chamber decreases, the fuel is compressed, the pressure increases, and then the high-pressure fuel is distributed to the injection pipelines of each cylinder through the distribution mechanism, and finally sprayed into the cylinder by the injector.
Type
According to the application scenario: there are cam discs for VE distribution pumps, which are common in some light and medium-sized diesel vehicles; there are also cam discs for other fuel injection systems such as inline pumps, which are generally used in large diesel engines or diesel vehicles with high requirements for fuel injection volume and pressure.
According to structural characteristics: it can be divided into ordinary cam discs and cam discs with special functions. Ordinary cam discs have basic cam profiles to realize basic driving plungers or control valve functions; cam discs with special functions may integrate some sensor installation positions or adjustment mechanisms, such as signal teeth for detecting camshaft position, to provide accurate injection or valve timing signals for the engine control system.
Common faults
Wear: The cam surface of the cam disc is in long-term contact and friction with the roller, plunger and other parts, which is prone to wear. Wear will cause the cam profile to deform, making the plunger stroke inaccurate, affecting the injection amount and injection pressure of the fuel, and then leading to problems such as engine power reduction, increased fuel consumption, and difficulty in starting.
Deformation: The cam disc may deform due to long-term high temperature and high load working environment, or due to improper installation, external force impact and other factors. The deformed cam disc will cause the plunger to move irregularly, resulting in uneven fuel injection, increased engine vibration, and even serious faults such as valve and piston collision.
Cracks or fractures: In extreme cases, such as poor quality of cam disc materials, excessive impact loads or fatigue stress, cracks or even fractures may occur. This will prevent the cam disc from driving the plunger or controlling the valve normally, causing the engine to stop working immediately, and may cause serious damage to other parts inside the engine.
