Automobile fuel injector cleaning steps without disassembly
Preparation
1. Tools and materials
Non-disassembly cleaning equipment: hanging bottle cleaning machine (including pressure gauge, connecting pipe, quick connector), fuel rail connectors suitable for different models (such as clamp type, screw type).
Cleaning agent:
Manifold injection model: choose an intake system cleaning agent containing PEA (polyether amine) or PIBA (polyisobutylene amine) (such as 3M 08946, BG 208 fuel system cleaning agent).
Direct injection model: use high-concentration PEA cleaning agent (such as Chevron TCP direct injection special, STP fuel system deep cleaning agent), or special direct injection cleaning fluid (such as Liqui Moly 2078).
Auxiliary tools: wrench, pliers, rag, gloves, goggles (to prevent cleaning agent from splashing), oil pan.
2. Vehicle inspection and safety measures
Turn off and cool: Make sure the engine stops and the temperature drops to room temperature to avoid burns.
Disconnect the fuel pump fuse/relay: prevent normal fuel supply during cleaning (different models have different positions, please refer to the maintenance manual, for example: Toyota Corolla fuel pump fuse is in the engine compartment fuse box).
Release fuel pressure: open the fuel tank cap, remove the return pipe on the fuel rail or use special tools to release pressure (some models need to start the vehicle idling until it automatically shuts down to empty the pipeline pressure).
Non-disassembly cleaning operation steps
1. Connect the cleaning equipment
Locate the fuel rail: open the engine compartment and find the fuel rail (manifold injection model is near the intake manifold, direct injection model is above the cylinder head).
Remove the fuel inlet pipe: use a wrench to loosen the fuel inlet pipe joint (be careful to catch the residual fuel with a rag to avoid open flames), and record the direction of the interface for restoration.
Connect the cleaning machine pipeline:
Connect the outlet pipe of the cleaning machine to the fuel inlet of the fuel rail through a quick connector or clamp (make sure the seal is leak-free).
If the return pipe of the cleaning machine needs to be connected (some equipment needs to form a loop), it should be connected to the fuel tank or directly suspended (the return pipe of the manifold injection model can be inserted into the waste oil bottle, and the return valve of the direct injection model can be directly closed because there is no return pipe).
Hanging cleaning bottle: Pour the cleaning agent into the cleaning machine bottle (about 500ml) and hang it above the engine compartment (the height must be higher than the fuel rail, and gravity is used to assist the pressure).
2. Set cleaning parameters
Adjust the pressure:
Manifold injection model: The pressure is set to 3-5bar (consistent with the working pressure of the fuel pump).
Direct injection model: High-pressure cleaning equipment is required, and the pressure is set to 50-100bar (some equipment supports simulating the high-pressure environment of direct injection, please refer to the equipment manual for details).
Start the engine: Turn on the cleaning machine switch and keep it idling (if it cannot be started, the fuel pump relay can be short-circuited to force fuel supply, but pay attention to safety).
3. Cleaning process control
Idle cleaning:
Keep the engine idling, the cleaning agent enters the injector with the "fuel", dissolves the carbon deposits and is discharged through the combustion chamber (the exhaust may emit black smoke, which is normal).
Cleaning time: about 30-40 minutes for manifold injection, about 40-60 minutes for direct injection models (if the carbon deposits are serious, you can pause halfway and let it stand for 10 minutes to allow the cleaning agent to fully penetrate).
Speed adjustment (optional):
Every 10 minutes, lightly step on the accelerator to 2000-3000 rpm for 30 seconds, using the airflow to flush the intake system and combustion chamber to enhance the cleaning effect.
4. End of cleaning and recovery
Shut down the equipment: When the cleaning fluid is about to run out, turn off the cleaning machine switch and turn off the engine.
Remove the cleaning pipeline: Disconnect the connection between the cleaning machine and the fuel rail, and wipe the residual cleaning agent at the interface with a clean rag.
Restore the fuel system:
Reconnect the fuel inlet pipe to ensure that the interface is tight and leak-free.
Plug back the fuel pump fuse/relay and open the fuel tank cap (balance pressure).
Start test: Ignite and start the vehicle, check whether the fuel line is leaking, observe whether the idle speed is stable, and whether the exhaust gas returns to normal (there may be a slight odor, which is caused by the burning of residual cleaning agent, and disappears after driving a distance).
Precautions
1. Safety regulations
Do not smoke or approach open flames during operation, and cleaning agents are flammable.
Wear gloves and goggles. If the cleaning agent contacts the skin, rinse with clean water immediately.
2. Vehicle model adaptation
Electronic injection vehicle model (manifold injection): All can use the hanging bottle type free disassembly cleaning.
Direct injection vehicle model: It is necessary to confirm whether the cleaning equipment supports high-pressure working conditions (some low-end equipment cannot simulate direct injection pressure, which may affect the effect), or choose special equipment from professional 4S shops (such as walnut sand cleaning + fuel system hanging bottle cleaning combination).
3. Abnormal situation handling
Difficult to start: If it is difficult to start after cleaning, it may be that air has entered the fuel line. You can ignite it multiple times or step on the accelerator to assist in emptying.
Idle vibration: The three-way catalytic converter may be blocked due to carbon deposits falling off. You can rev the accelerator to 3000 rpm for 2 minutes or drive on a highway to clear it.
4. Subsequent maintenance
It is recommended to add a bottle of fuel additive (such as BASF Happy Run) after cleaning to consolidate the cleaning effect.
Avoid short-distance low-speed driving immediately. It is recommended to drive more than 20 kilometers to allow the engine to fully burn the residual cleaning agent.
